This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I recall my own high school days and reflect on my science classes, I do not remember the lectures or the readings. I do recall that we got to DO science experiments. Funding these labs in microchemistry will allow students in my non-laboratory classroom to experience that feeling as well.

Students are typically 11th graders in Integrated Science or Chemistry who have a desire to extend their education to the university level.

The school is a public, urban, comprehensive school in Southern California. In particular, the Integrated Science students are in a group that has been targeted by the school as one that has the most potential for improvement on the State tests.

My Project

Funding of this proposal will allow my students to perform real chemistry experiments that are not typically possible in my classroom. My room was not intended to be a chemistry classroom. There are only two sinks, a few electrical outlets, very little counter space, and no working gas outlets. Therefore, I need to resort to novel and unique plans to give my students the experimental experiences that all chemistry students should be exposed to. The requested kits will go along with equipment that I already have secured from other sources to expand a microchemistry laboratory that will give our students the same results and experiences as full-scale chemistry laboratory exercises.

I have the know-how: I am a National Board Certified teacher with multiple degrees in the sciences.

What I need from you is the funding to secure equipment and supplies so that we can together as a team give these students memorable laboratory experiences that will make the topics learned in lectures and readings much more concrete in their minds. Thanks for considering this project.
