My Students
My students are children with low incidence disabilities. These disabilities can range from autism spectrum disorders to severe cognitive impairment. These kids are amazing, they are strong, they are curious, they are fighters. My students live in communities that are disenfranchised. Their families must often choose between food and field trips. Yet they give everything they can to help normalize childhood. My students learn. They work hard. They learn best if learning is provided in a small group, at a slower pace, with multiple visuals and using materials they can see and touch with the least number of distractions possible. Being at home for learning has been ultra tough. Kids routines are up for grabs, parents are overwhelmed and regression is a big fear. We left school suddenly with the notion we would return soon. My student's resources are safely tucked away in a building we cannot go into.
My Project
My kids are really struggling without the tools they use at school on any given day.
As we are heading into several weeks of remote learning and have a few more to go I realize that there are some low technology items my students need to have at home to keep our online sessions flowing and to encourage the students be independent.
The headphones are so important because the kids are so easily distracted. These will block out siblings, parents and pets! We use white boards for everything! Help us, please!
