Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have had the same students for the past two years and am fortunate enough to have them again for their eighth grade year. They are full of energy and have a passion and love for learning. Over the last few years I have gotten to know them well, and they are very grateful and appreciative of everything that is given to them.
I teach in a Title I, public school on the southwest side of Chicago where 97% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
We have a very fortunate situation of having 50% African American students and 50% Hispanic. This provides us the opportunity to learn and grow from each other. I have 90 awesome eighth graders who have come SO far in the last few years, and I look forward to seeing them grow into young adults and graduate this year!
My Project
All students have a variety of learning needs. One way to ensure that students are successful is for them to have autonomy over their learning environment.
These chairs would provide the students who desire a place other than a desk to have a space to complete their work.
It has been proven that when students have the ability to chose how to work they perform better. Currently I only have a carpet for students to sit on besides their desks. This also provides a classroom that feels more comfortable and like home, so students are more apt to feel at peace in the classroom.
