My students need comfortable seating to read and relax, basic school supplies, like pencils and ear buds, and art supplies to offer creative outlets for my students.
I work with a group of children with special needs who possess the motivation to learn, despite their individual challenges. Each student is unique and has special talents. They also have learning disabilities which make their success in school even more rewarding. Some thrive creating art projects but struggle to read. Others love math and reading but find it difficult to concentrate in the traditional classroom setting. They all have one thing in common. They want to learn.
For many of my students, the classroom is the safest, most nurturing place they know.
They come from the inner city and regularly experience negative and even dangerous circumstances in their community on a daily basis. Some students come from homes where education isn't as big a priority as getting basic needs met. Some students have suffered trauma no person should ever have to face.
It is important to make their school experience a positive one. It is a place where they can come each day and know the teachers will be there for them. My kids demonstrate their appreciation every day. Even on bad days, the students find ways to cheer each other up. Their sense of community amazes me.
My Project
Because I work with students who have disabilities, I often find that traditional teaching methods do not always work for my students. Also, reading is the most challenging subject and much of their learning involves reading material in all subject areas. We read together to work on our reading skills but measuring their understanding in the traditional way, a pen and paper test, is a daunting task for many of them. I requested art materials because it will allow my students the means to express their knowledge in a creative way. I have tons of project ideas, just not enough resources to do them.
In addition, I want my students to feel a sense of community in my classroom.
I want their classroom to be warm and inviting - a home away from home. We work in small groups and have many things going on at one time. It's important that we respect each others needs. The special seating will give the kids their own special place to read and hold discussions. The ear buds will allow students in the technology group to listen to their stories on the computers without disrupting others. We can all work together to make the classroom a safe place to learn and grow.
