My Students
My students do not like the floor.
They will not sit there any more.
Achy bodies, restless groaning.
Divert learning and exploring.
A cozy rug is what they need.
A place to sit that’s soft indeed.
Many of my students come from impoverished backgrounds or less then ideal home lives and many are ELL students.
Half of my students live in apartments. They should be able to come to school and have the materials in class to learn, be safe, and be comfortable. I want my students to develop a lifelong love of reading and learning in my class this year. This is my first year at a Title One School. I need some basic materials in my classroom for instruction and assessment and to keep them comfortable to optimize their learning. Our school was opened in 1979. Because of a fire, it was rebuilt and opened in February 1995. We have about 600 families that attend our school. We haven't had many involved parents but this year our goal is to bring families back to the school and our classrooms. We're ready to make a BIG change.
My Project
The classroom rug will be used for all close group instruction. Students will sit on it for morning message, calendar, reading time, centers, music time, writing, and many, many lessons. I picture my students sitting together on a cozy rug as I read to them, as they read and write with me and participating in lessons. They deserve to come to a comfortable, safe classroom. First grade is my favorite grade to teach because it really sets a foundation for a life of learning. I want this year to be magical for them and get them excited for learning.
“The more you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
- Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"
I love to read to my students. I need a comfortable place for them to listen. They love books. The more we read the more they'll know. The more they learn, the more places they'll go.
Will you help me take them there?
Thank you!
