This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My ENL students have loved receiving and reading their new non-fiction books from our last project! We use a curriculum in ENL that embeds Science and History into language learning. As a first-year teacher, one of my goals is to build a library of academically engaging books and stories for my English Language Learners to read. Although they have loved the non-fiction topics, texts, and books, they would love to have fiction options as well. I compiled a list of fiction chapter books that are relevant to the science and history topics that the students are learning about.
Having a balance of non-fiction and fiction texts supports and builds language learning with a plethora of vocabulary and connection-making.
Students can make academic and personal connections between the non-fiction and fiction texts, as well as practice the vocabulary in different book structures. Non-fiction books teach academic vocabulary with a real-life context but fiction books are just as essential. Fiction books engage students in the characters' problems and solutions, keeping them eager to read more. The motivation to read more can increase their comprehension skills and they will learn about different experiences, emotions, problems, and resolutions they may relate to. Having fiction books to supplement all the non-fiction books will make a difference in the immersive experience of reading!
