Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an award winning high school band program at a Title I school serving students in grades 9-12. In spite of our low income status, our students have been able to achieve a great amount of success in our competitive organizations as well as on the concert stage. Through strong student leadership and an understanding that not having money is not an excuse, our students leave our school knowing that failure is never an option.
Due to financial restraints, we receive $0 in funding from our school board. Our students currently do fundraisers to pay for the basic operating expenses of maintaining our band program.
Now that we have achieved success in spite of financial hardships, both outside and on the concert stage, we have embarked on a new journey, creating a jazz program. The jazz program will be used to broaden their musical background, better preparing our students for college. Every year there is at least one student from our program that goes into the field of Music Education. These students need to be exposed to as many facets of music as possible before they leave our program.
While we have most of the instruments we need to begin our jazz program, we have no source to amplify the Bass player. We are in desperate need of this amplification source to put a "bottom" on our ensemble. By taking part in a fully equipped Jazz Ensemble the students will get a much better sense of the importance of the Bass player in the jazz idiom.
Your support will not only help our students experience Jazz in the classroom, but will also open doors for us to take this group into the community to bring live music to those who may never get the opportunity to experience it otherwise.
