Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The amazing students at my school come from high-poverty homes. We are a large school with a lot of grade-level integration. Our students are caring and try their best despite the odds stacked against them. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My U.S. History classroom sees 6 classes of about 25 students. Our population is very transient, many of our students are English language learners.
These 7th graders are creative, artistic, silly, and love to try new things.
However, many of my students are struggling readers which can cause problems for them in history. Because of these deficits, I am always looking for new, innovative ways to help my students grow and succeed!
My Project
My students are in need of headphones to use with the many educational programs and apps we use in class to better understand our nation's complex history.
We use apps such as Nearpod, Flocabulary, and PBS Learning Media.
These apps are interactive with videos, games, and audio options. Many of these apps and programs also offer read-aloud options which many of our English language learners need to be successful. Some programs are also in the form of games that have fun sound effects which the students enjoy hearing while they "play".
Many of my 7th graders also enjoy listening to their own music while they work. Having a class set of headphones has shown that my students are more engaged in their assignments when their surroundings make them feel more comfortable.
