This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Second graders need to be able to play. One way to do this in the classroom is using Lego. Many of many students don't have access to Lego outside of the classroom. Our class uses Lego Learning to increase engagement and work on fine motor skills all while learning and expressing ourselves.
My students come from a low income school.
Many of them do not have access to Lego outside of school. In a time where students are set in front of a computer or television when they get home, exposing them to hands on creative resources while they are at school is even more important. My students are very inquisitive and using Lego to build and rebuild will help them to understand the world around them. We use Lego to represent story problems, which gives the students a concrete understanding of the problem. They also use the Lego to help build their math fact fluency and we use them with storytelling also.
My Project
We will use the More To Math kits to explore this new curriculum that helps them understand mathematical processes and encourages them to persevere and keep trying in Math. Using Lego in Math allows the students to have a tangible method of manipulating and showing what they know. It allows younger students to physically manipulate to understand more abstract concepts at a deeper level. It puts the power of learning into their hands, literally!
Your donations will help incorporate PLAY into learning by having students use Legos to display their knowledge.
This will allow students to work on their fine motor skills, ability to work in groups, and to persevere in Math.
