I am the super lucky teacher of 60 of the most hard-working, sweetest, creative multilingual kiddos one could ever have the pleasure of working with. My kids come from families where languages such as Spanish, Hmong, Persian, Mandarin, Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian are spoken in the home. As their multilingual teacher, my job is to help them grow their English language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Many of my kiddos are considered newcomers, which means they have little to no exposure to English. They are trying to adjust to a new country, new school, and a new language.
Throughout the year, my multilingual learners have used technology for all sorts of things-practicing their speaking by creating videos with apps like Chatterpix and Greenscreen, translating from their home language to English using apps like Say Hi and Google Translate, researching to learn more about the world around them, and reading books in both their home language and English.
Many of these activities require the use of applications which aren't available on their Chromebooks. This is where the iPad comes into play. Having an iPad in our classroom would allow my students to grow their English language proficiency in a fun, engaging, relevant way, and would provide them the opportunity to work independently on activities which help prepare them for the English proficiency testing they complete yearly. I have used my phone this year to help them create various projects, but this isn't ideal. Having an iPad for them to share in our classroom would put them in the driver's seat of their English language learning.
