Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Library is books, reading, authors, genres, writing, rhyming, weather, science; anything you can think of! My goal as librarian is to get kids excited about reading. The mantra of my classroom is "The more that you read, the more that you know, the more that you learn the more places you'll go!"

Most of my students are energetic and enthusiastic about life.

This is no small feat considering over 80% are living in poverty. Some live with grandparents, in foster care, or other displaced situations. Most have no computers, no technology, and often no support. Many go home to an empty house and spend their day on the street. But when they are in school, they are alive, vibrant, and loving. We teach them how to live, how to love, and how to trust. Our school is located in a high drug and crime area and most families live in deplorable conditions, often with no food. The meals we provide for breakfast and lunch are often all these students get each day. Magic happens every day at school; students feel safe, loved, and strive to please all staff members who are more like family than teachers. The school has a predominance of Hispanic students and many are non-English speaking. Students are expected to reach high standards and they rise to the challenge despite hardships.

My Project

As students flood through the gates each morning they flock to the library. There are board games, puzzles, books, puppets, and other items for students to use before they head to class. There are 6 computers the 500 students vie to use each day to read, research, and play games. These students crave technology; they are not given these resources in their homes so they have to come to school to manipulate and learn how to use them. With the introduction of iPads, students are able to continue those activities while learning essential skills they will use for their lifetime. An added bonus will be the addition of technology in library lessons as students can explore topics covered in class through digital resources available on the iPad. I strive to teach students that computers and technology are much more than just a fancy gaming system. Allowing the students to manipulate the iPad in centers or group activities gives them opportunity to learn hand on.

These students are growing up in the era of digital natives, but they are starving for the ability to learn how to use these tools.

Beginning a collection of iPads will help them gain confidence in their ability to utilize technology. This will help them for their adapting to the real world and prepare them for increasing challenges with Common Core requirements. Providing another avenue to research and manipulate technology will help them become comfortable and competitive.
