My Students
“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” – David Warlick
I teach two 8th grade self-contained classes to students with disabilities.
My students are hilarious, motivated, polite, hardworking, and respectful. Unfortunately, not all of my students function at the same grade levels. Of my 15 students, 11 function close to grade level, and 4 are "alternate assessment." This means they do not take the NYS Common Core Exam at the end of the school year.
The 4 alternate assessed students function anywhere from the 1st grade to the 3rd grade level. This causes a large divide in the math topics I can present in my classroom. Those 4 students work together in a group on materials that are appropriate for them, while the remaining 11 students work on material relevant to the Common Core State Exam at the end of the school year. However, I am only one person, and find it difficult to teach my class, while also assessing them to make sure all are being challenged appropriately.
My Project
When my students are working on material at their grade level, they are more engaged and motivated because they GET IT!! However, it is very difficult to work on skills to meet the various grade levels of my alternate assessment students, while also teaching the 8th grade Common Core material to those students who take the NYS exam in April.
My 4 alternate assessment students work very well on computer-based programs, such as IXL, to help generate materials at their grade levels. However, it is impossible for all 4 students to be working on one computer screen. I would like to be able to provide those students access to iPads, so we can work on math education apps in order to boost their skills. There are so many educational opportunities through apps that we do not have the privilege of taking advantage of. I plan to pair my alternate assessment students up, and work together on various games, activities, and assessments through the iPads.
This iPad donation will greatly impact my alternate assessed students.
It will give me an opportunity to provide them grade-level material and monitor their progress through the assessments given electronically. This will also help me to be able to meet the needs of the students who take the state exam at the end of the year.
