My Students
The question above asks, "Where do you want your students to be at the end of the school year?" In third grade we are fortunate to have nutrition experts come into our class. I want to augment that goal with physical fitness. I want my students to internalize the meaning of staying fit.
Our school is a K-8 rural school in central California with a student population of 500.
We have over 50% of our children on free and reduced lunch. We have no immediate buildings around our campus. We are surrounded by woods and cow fields. All the students must ride the bus to come to school. Our student population is predominantly white with less than 20% ESL. Of those students most are Hispanic. Our students work hard and continue to strive for success.
My Project
My students need equipment for PE centers such as hula hoops, jump ropes, rubber band balls, and ball jumps. I have received training on a variety of appropriate PE strategies that are fun and engaging for students. We can do centers, group competitions, and whole class activities with just a few materials. My students will skip, run, jump rope, and have a blast while learning about fitness and how nutrition plays a part in their fitness.
Fitness is a life long goal.
Some students come to me with already a few years of soccer, baseball, or swimming. Others have joined no team sport and never will. What I would like to instill in my students is that fitness, not necessarily sports, is for everyone. These games and strategies that I will teach form a natural progression as each student reaches one goal and then chooses the next.
