Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My desire is to instill a lifelong love for books and reading so my students can make a difference in the world. My students' faces shine with pride when they find high-interest books they relate to and are able to read independently.

I teach 28 active, energetic third graders who range in their academic abilities.

All of my students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. A majority of my students are English Language Learners, coming from homes that speak a language other than English. Families want more than anything to see their children succeed, but they often lack resources.

By putting basic supplies in my classroom, I will be able to design and modify lessons to meet the needs of my students.

My Project

Teaching is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. Period. I take my students' successes and joys personally. On the other hand, I also take their hardships and lows personally, as well. Over the years, I've heard so many heartbreaking stories from my students and their parents. My students come from many different households.

Many of my babies have experienced things that most adults could not handle.

I want to remind them that they are not alone. I am hoping to get books that discuss what my students have to handle outside of the classroom: alternative households, displacement, deceased parents and pets, positive self-image, improving self-esteem, teaching empathy, incarcerated family members, divorce, blended families, self-control, adoption, moving, and loving their culture (many of my students' parents do not speak English and I am finding that they are caught between two worlds).

As adults, we know how life affects us; it impacts children even more so! Through the years, I've seen children find out that they were adopted, lose their parents, caregivers, pets, house, siblings. You can see how these changes impact their grades, personality, and social life. They have tried to control their outbursts, behaviors, and emotions. They've lacked self-esteem and confidence. My job is to not only teach my students how to read, write, add, and subtract, but how to become the best human beings they can be. I want them to love themselves and try to cope with life the best way possible.
