Help me give my students multicultural and social-emotional books to help us understand the changes going on in school/the world, how to understand our feelings, and how to cope with change. We love read-alouds!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, kind, thoughtful kids. They are between the ages of 4-6 and in a self-contained special education class. Many students are English Language Learners who come from high poverty homes. Many students share homes with several other families making online learning difficult sometimes. Regardless of where my students come from, they always show up with a positive attitude, and they always remember to be kind. Our school and my classroom truly serve many different purposes for these kids. My students love school and they are eager to get back into the classroom and learn! Many of them have expressed that story-time is their favorite time and that they can connect with characters in books that look like them.
My Project
The school I work in is in Washington Heights and 91.9% of the student population is Hispanic, 6.1% African American, .9% two or more races...etc. Representation in children's books is imperative. It helps kids relate to literature and feel comfortable in their own situations, their own skin, and their own environment. Our school is following a blended learning model and no matter how instruction is being implemented, read-alouds are always everyone's favorite part of the day. These books can help us understand what it is that we feel, come to terms with change, learn how to cope with change, and reinforce acceptance and strength in diversity. Books help spark conversation and help kids reflect on the messages portrayed in them. In today's climate, it is so important we have continuous conversations to practice self-love no matter the color of your skin, and teach kids to accept those different than ourselves.
