Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Langston Hughes asks a question everyone should ponder: "What happens to a dream deferred?" To which, he answers with other questions: "Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun? / Or fester like a sore-- / And then run?" With this (and this project as a whole), students learn to never give up.
My students are, by and large, from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Los Angeles.
Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and the first to attend (and graduate) college. They are smart, motivated, and hilarious. They make time in my classroom fly by. In fact, time with them doesn't feel like work. It feels like being around the dinner table with family. In other words, my students make the class feel like home.
My Project
Students will use this book to reflect on the American Dream and how the realities of the world impact what people (think they) are capable of. This book will give students pause to think about their own lives, for students share many similarities with the characters in the book. The idea is to question whether people can transcend the difficulties brought on upon by race and poverty. (The answer is yes.) This book will allow for a myriad of lessons and practice on essay writing and literary analysis, which are two skills utterly necessary for college.
This project will help my students prepare for the rigor and challenges of college, for no student can succeed in college without having read books from cover to cover.
This project will allow me to challenge my students and foster their critical thinking and, in effect, prepare them for college and life.
