My Students

Have a you ever wondered why middle schoolers are so reluctant to read and seem to have little to no motivation to pick up a book? Have you ever considered that maybe it has something to do with what is available to them? Turn these reluctant readers into book worms with these high interest books.

These middle school students are reluctant yet very capable readers, but have little to no books of interest available to them.

They whine and complain about not wanting to read the outdated books from the intervention library and don't ever get the chance to visit the local library. Asking them to read books during independent reading time and intervention is like pulling teeth, but it doesn't have to be that way. A majority of these students are of minority descent and come from low-income families. Over 95% of the student population is on free and reduced lunch and do not have books that they own. They attend a charter school where teachers give them ample time to read and reflect, but they have no interest in doing those things. They lack motivation to read because of the lack of variety of texts they can choose from. These middle schoolers range in ability level from struggling readers to high ability. They need books that will challenge all of them in one way or another.

My Project

These books will make a difference in the lives of these children and will inspire them to read more. The students do not want to read because according to them, "there is nothing to read." They want graphic novels and high interest books and that's exactly what this will give them. The students would not only have books that they could read during independent reading time, but the set of books would be useful for literature circles or small group intervention. The students can practice literature circle roles that deal with vocabulary, asking questions, summarizing, etc. These books will inspire them to read much more frequently and that is exactly what we want. We want them to learn the value of reading and to also enjoy it.

These children need these books to add some variety and flavor into what they are reading.

These books will not only inspire them to read frequently, but would also be great discussion starters. These students not only need these books, but they deserve them.
