Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine this: it'ÂÂs center time and the library is open except no one is in there. Wonder why? The reason for this is because we have very few books and many of the books are taped and outdated. Would you blame the children for not wanting to spend time in the library? I wouldn'ÂÂt and I don'ÂÂt.

I am fortunate to teach in an at-risk, blended Pre-K classroom with 3, 4 and 5 year olds.

These children soared into their Pre-K experience headfirst. They love to read books and have books read to them. The enrollment at our school has range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences, challenges and abilities. However, once through the doors, there is a real sense of community, mutual respect and friendship. Our school is located in a predominantly low-income neighborhood, which means that many of our students may not have access to many of the materials outside the classroom, especially books. Unfortunately, our school funding leaves little room for new materials, and many of our classrooms are missing some of the essentials materials needed in a Pre-K classroom, BOOKS!

My Project

My students need books related to social emotional development, that are interesting, vibrant and will have an impact on their everyday lives. Most of my students come from families where they can not afford to purchase books of their own or even get to a library because they don't have cars. It's crucial at an early age to instill a love of reading in a child. Reading is the key to success. If we want to teach our students how important reading is, we need to be able give them a variety of books to spark their interest. Social emotional related books will help us achieve that goal. I am requesting 26 new books including The Most Magnificent Thing, I Hate Everything!, and Giraffes Can't Dance.

By funding this project, not only will you be providing necessary books for awesome children, you are encouraging and helping a child develop a genuine love of reading.
