My Students
In her poem, Emily Dickinson writes: "There is no Frigate like a Book/ To take us Lands away." For many, reading has been the ship to sail them away to distant lands, times, and experiences.
For my students, ethnically diverse individuals who come from economically marginalized communities, literature and poetry become even more powerful and important.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting copies of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson and bookmarks for students in my AP English class. Students have traditionally struggled with poetry - reading, comprehending, and enjoying poems. My goal this year has been to infuse more poetry throughout our lessons so students are not as timid when they encounter a poem. With these books, we'll spend a few weeks analyzing Dickinson's poetry, life, and her enduring appeal (including a fun, new TV series on AppleTV). Not only will students read, analyze, annotate, and discuss Dickinson's poetry, but they will use her poems as a springboard for their own creative writing. Students will make their own fascicles (little booklets sewn together) to record their thoughts and poems.
It is my hope that my students grow to appreciate poetry and understand that it can serve as an outlet to process life and the world around us.
