Help me give my students an independent reading corner they will love with comfy spots to sit on bean bags and cushions and dig into lovely, sparkling, and independently chosen books!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Every semester, my students set independent reading requirements and weekly reading goals to meet for our English classes. The objectives of incorporating independent reading include ensuring they are reading independently and guiding them to curate their own reading lives. Creating spaces in the classroom that lend themselves to settling in and reading will visually, emotionally, and practically emphasize that this is an essential skill: to pick up a book and feel like you can read it.
We are in a Title One, urban high school that rarely has extra funds for unique spaces such as reading corners.
Therefore, to encourage a love of reading while also implementing a safe, comfortable space, we are asking for funding to support the creation of this special classroom space. I have already started a small reading space, and the funding for these items will contribute to expanding and further solidifying a cozy reading and studying space within my larger classroom for over 150 English students.
I also selected several titles and sets of books that are especially appealing to students this year. Because I have some students who are avid readers already, I was able to use some of their suggestions and book recommendations when selecting titles to add to our classroom library. I chose several titles by diverse authors to represent various genres that are especially popular right now. These additional, new books will help to also reinforce the values of having a reading life and incorporating agency into book selections.
There are many barriers to reading and enjoying books, thus the goal is to remove as many of them as possible. A special reading space within the classroom helps to address some of the challenges that students often face when it comes to independent reading while also encouraging safety and comfort.
