My Students
I see each of the 1050 students in the school for only 40 minutes per week, but "I love Music Class" is a commonly heard saying. There are many students who love the class simply because it is a safe haven for them to be themselves, to be accepted, and to learn all at the same time. Coming from India, the Phillippines, Malaysia parts of Africa, Latin and South America, and Kurdish region, blending with American culture as well as holding on to their own can seem overwhelming to them sometimes!
In addition to varied cultural backgrounds, my students have a wide range of abilities from the most inquisitive and active, to those suffering emotional, physical, and/or learning needs as well as English Learners.
Yet they are in my class eager to participate and feel the joy of a Music Community. We love to sing, dance, chant, create body percussion, play instruments, and listen to beautiful, inspiring music. Although they don't know it, they are becoming proficient music readers and expressive music performers! I have seen a significant change toward inclusion, acceptance, tolerance, and community.
My Project
A May Day program at the end of the school year, complete with a Maypole, dancers and folk dancing? YES. What a great way to include parents, families, and celebrate Spring! But it is impossible to have the complete experience without sound, and we need a sound system to bring the music outside!
As a Music Teacher, I love to include folk dancing whenever I can; it is a great way to get the students moving with a purpose!
Students can hear the difference in tone color, style, layering of instruments, and song form all at once when they are dancing to songs from all over the world. They learn about the traditions that make the dance/song important in the culture from which it came.
In addition, folk dancing builds community. So often I have a student come to me and say, "Our family goes to this festival and I have seen this dance", or "I know this song from my grandparents!"
