My Students
Ray Bradbury said, "You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them." Help us make sure we can read more of what this man has written.
My students are lively, energetic, generally excitable kids from all over the city.
Some of them travel over an hour every morning just to get to our public high school. Though our school has a dedicated staff, our district is incredibly underfunded and so our curriculum is dictated by our limited resources. Even so, my students always bring great questions about race and privilege, freedom and war, the past and the future, and our English class has been so much better for their willingness to raise some deep and complicated issues.
My Project
The resources I'm requesting basically amount to four class sets of Ray Bradbury's book of short stories, "The Illustrated Man." I have used stories from this book in class before, as an example of frame story and as a look into how much sadness and wonder can be created in just one page. My students have always asked to borrow my ancient copy of the book after we finish The Veldt, or Kaleidoscope--I think it's because Bradbury's writing is so transformative. Because of their interest I've decided it's about time to create a Bradbury/Dystopia unit.
The best part of asking for these resources in particular is that they will be immediately used by hundreds of kids. Just by donating to this project you will be providing extra resources to around 500 students every year. These books will be a part of the Dystopia unit as well as the Short Story unit.
First, your support will influence more than 500 students every year.
But second, and more importantly, the quality of that influence will be significant. Interesting and engaging students is the hardest part, so there is nothing sadder than having interested kids with no materials to offer them. My students have already shown intense interest in Bradbury, his alternate worlds, and what they tell us about our own world. This project is our chance to put great books in the hands of eager students.
