My Project

"Scientific inquiry starts with observation. The more one can see, the more one can investigate."-Martin Chalfie, professor and Nobel Prize recipient for chemistry. I want to challenge my students to make careful observations throughout the school year and build skills in how to best record their observations.

The clip-on fisheye, wide angle, and macro lenses will allow students to use their phones to not only gain a different view of objects, but to capture photos of what they are seeing.

This will allow them to share their photos (and observations and questions!) with others, as well as review them later and notice additional details. They engage in scientific sketching of living and nonliving objects throughout the year, as well as observe and try to notice and record changes over time. They usually do their sketching in the classroom, but I would love for them to venture outside this year!

The lenses will offer students additional views, both in detail using a macro lens, as well as considering the subject within its greater context with the wide angle lens. I am also requesting one set of additional lenses that includes a telephoto lens to see what comes of students trying out those. I am excited to see what specific activities we do using these lenses, what students ask to look at, and how they will be able to discuss their observations and ideas with more than the students in their lab group. The set of lenses will be available for use by all science teachers, since there are observations, scientific sketching, and field studies done at all grade levels. These lenses will provide new opportunities for our students to view, discuss, make sense of, and marvel at the natural world!
