This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many people don't understand what students with sensory disorders experience daily in a typical classroom environment. I want to give my students a calming place to go where they can get away from sensory overload. This center will provide them with a place to self-regulate.

I teach students with learning disabilities, sensory processing disorders, autism, etc.

Many find it difficult to get through the school day without meltdowns. They experience sensory overload from the typical classroom environment. They need a place to relax and calm their bodies and minds so they are ready to learn. Our school consists of mostly second language learners from low-income households. With budget cuts, it is difficult to obtain the additional resources that students with disabilities need. I want my students to have every opportunity to experience success in school.

My Project

My students will use these resources to help calm their bodies and ready their minds for learning. The fuzzy bean bag cover and chair will provide sensory input and provide a comfortable place to unwind. The scented diffuser, vibrating snake, and fidgets are all tools that will help calm students and provide sensory input while they are in the "time in" area.

These sensory tools are important because they allow my students with special needs to self-regulate.

They can choose to remove themselves from a stressful situation before a meltdown. This will give them confidence to control their own bodies with minimal teacher prompts. I want them to have a place to go that is not viewed as punishment.
