There Are Careers Beyond Being An Athlete Or Rapper

My students need a variety of resource books (at different reading levels) in order to explore different careers.

In an urban setting, I teach an active group of nine through twelve year olds who are eager to learn. Many of these students have challenges facing them, including being new English learners and/or reading below grade level.

Ask any child what he or she wants to be when they grow up, you will hear lofty plans to be someone who "makes lots of money" but doesn't have to work hard. It is obvious that they may not understand the pathways to credible jobs. In our state standards, it is written that we are to study about careers. But, finding the time is difficult. I would like to build a classroom library of resource books that explore a variety of jobs. Presently, our school's library has very few such books. Having it close at hand will make it easier for students to begin exploring their dreams.

I would like a variety of books that explore such careers as being a: builder, dancer, teacher, doctor, musician, reporter, police officer, fire fighter, babysitter, veterinarian, author, president, astronaut, fashion designer, and Peace Corps volunteer.
