This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many artists are taught throughout K-12 that the primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. And it's not until a college-level course that students take a deep dive into color mixing. This knowledge gives artists the tools to create any color that they see or imagine.

I want my Art I students to learn that there are 5 primary colors - and choosing which one to use isn't about the name on the bottle, but the pigment the paint is made with.

I only buy the primary colors and I teach my students how to mix all of the other colors that they might need. This year, I would like to expand to introducing my students to the traditional color wheel (red, blue, yellow) and the modern color wheel (cyan, magenta, yellow).

Students will work collaboratively to create both color wheels using the different primary colors. We will reflect on the way that different primaries mixed together. (For a vibrant green, mix cyan and yellow. For a darker green, mix blue and yellow.)

Throughout the year, they will use the color mixing charts that they create to decide which version of a color they would like to make and the ratios of primary colors to mix together to create it.
