My Project
I want to provide students with a variety of tools to use while engaging in the therapeutic space. Many students struggle with having their sensory needs met. The sensory table and storage allow me to have a variety of sensory experiences available for students to choose from, whether it's sand, dry pasta, water, or pompoms.
The sensory table will be a tool for students to calm down and a space for students to create a physical representation of what they are experiencing.
Students come to me for short-term therapy, brain breaks, de-escalation, and crisis management. Young children rely on concrete representations of what's going on in their heads. The sensory table provides a space for the physical representation and allows students to physically engage in the healing process.
The shelf and buckets provide storage for a variety of sensory materials, allowing students to choose what they engage with. Students can choose to engage with sand, dry rice, pasta, pompoms, slime or Kinetic Sand. Having a place to store the materials means students have autonomy and ownership over their therapeutic session. Storage also means I don't have to spend a lot of time getting materials ready for sessions, because they can be pulled from a shelf and put into the sensory table.
