My students are extremely reluctant readers. I do have some students that choose a novel over the world of social media; however, there are fewer and fewer each year. The Lord of the Flies is a timeless classic that covers a plethora of standards I need to cover.
Even though the book was written in 1955, there are so many themes that cover what all is going on in the world today.
This book can be highly engaging when taught with passion. It was one of the books that my 9th grade English teacher taught that made a lasting impression on me. This generation of students are so used to instant gratification that comes along with the copious amount of time spent on social media and other sources found on the World Wide Web.
