This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a unique urban partner high school with block scheduling, small learning communities, and advisory class for all students. My advisory class will graduate in 2011. I have advised them every day since the school opened and they will be among the first graduates to have spent all four years at our school. My 30 juniors are some of the top students at the school, but they still know so little about the college process, as many of their parents did not even complete high school. In this pivotal year in their high school career, I intend to facilitate an exploration of everything college.
Because our school is a high-needs public school, we cannot acquire all the supplies we need from the district. One of our missions is to prepare students (who might not otherwise consider advanced education) for college. Advisory class is the perfect space to focus on college preparatory activities, but I need books on college and the SATs to use as resources for them.
You can help! If I can secure a variety of college and SAT prep books for my classroom, then I can both guide them through lessons about college and allow them independent and group work time to explore the books and decide what advanced educational experience is right for them and what they need to do to get there.
You could help make my students' college dreams a reality. It seems to me that the difference between those who go to college and those who don't is sometimes based on awareness alone. With these books, my students can never claim ignorance, and will be able to truly conceptualize a future with higher education.
