This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When the funds for all general education classrooms seem to be decreasing, the funds for all elective art classrooms seems to be completely nonexistent! My drama students need as much time and resources to completely immerse themselves in the art.

I have three beginning drama classes that consist of about 35 students each.

Although this is the first time many of the students are experiencing theatre, they are energetic, confident and willing to learn. Our school is a new inner-city school located in an area in which theatres are few and far between and theatre-going is not a common practice.

My Project

One way for my students to completely see theatre arts as a valuable asset to their lives and academic growth is to literally "see" themselves-- with camcorders! Camcorders will allow the students to record the scenes they perform, then view it! This is will enable students to do a detailed analysis and evaluation of their own work. Without this, the students rely solely on the critique of myself and their peers. Although feedback from any audience is helpful, nothing beats your own evaluation. Students will be able to deconstruct elements of their performance such as voice projection, tone, body language, and partner dynamic in a way that would not be possible if they just reflected upon their performance by memory.

Art programs in inner-city schools provide the students will an alternative means to express themselves and an additional extra-curricular program to be involved in.

This donation's impact could be viewed just as means to record scenes in drama class, but in reality, it is a contribution to these students' cultural and creative development. The donation will validate the belief that art does matter, and it does deserve the resources and attention that core classes receive. Thank you!
