This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
By gosh, my kids love to act! Put them up on stage and they really ham it up. Performing in a play gives them confidence and language skills that are immeasurable. What they really need, though, is for the audience to see and hear them.
My fourth graders live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood.
Most of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids, who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.
My Project
Every year my students create an original play and perform it for the school and families. Our plays are always tied to curricular areas like social studies or science, and we paint our own sets and sing songs as part of the performance. This year our play is a mystery that takes place during the California Gold Rush. Our play is hilarious and the actors are wonderful, but we have a major problem. It's hard to see and hear the kids!
Our play would be so much better if our students had wireless microphones to amplify their voices. That way, they would be able to focus on acting strategies other than volume control. We would also benefit from nesting benches to use as props. These are useful to stand on and will replace the rickety chairs we are currently using. We are asking for three sets of wireless microphone units, plus two sets of nesting benches.
With your generous donation, the audience will be able to see and hear our wonderful actors.
When the gold prospector stands on a bench and says, "Eureka!" they will be able to see and hear him in the back row. My students and I thank you for your kindness!
