This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever been in an audience where you couldn’t hear the actor? Maybe you hear part of dialog but you couldn’t hear key information or words. My students often struggle to hear themselves when they put on plays or give oral presentations in the classroom.

I teach 5th grade in a public school located near Los Angeles, CA.

Our school is in a low socio-economic, bilingual community. More than half of my class are English Language Learners. Our entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. I have a very large class with 33 students. We are an Art Prototype school where I have had an amazing opportunity to see theater teachers teach my students. Many of my students have a love for performing arts.

My Project

A microphone and a listening center will help my students put on plays and give oral presentations. Students will have the opportunity to practice their presentations and parts in a play at the listening center that has voice recording capabilities and play it back. Being able to listen to your own voice gives you the opportunity to work on projection, articulation, voice inflections, and overall pace of your part or speech. The microphone will also provide me with the ability to amplify my own voice when we are doing cooperative groups with a large class it tends to get a little loud and it would be wonderful if my students could hear me so I could better facilitate their learning. Research has shown that classroom amplification can improve standardized test scores by 10 percent. Students also will get a better understanding of grade level standards by bringing them to life on stage.

Please help inspire my students by helping them obtain valuable resources to foster their love for theater arts.

A microphone and listening/recording center will help students become better actors/actresses, performers, presenters, and give them confidence to carry with them for years to come. Thank you for supporting public education, fifth grade students, English language learners, and the performing arts.
