My Students
We are an urban elementary school where supplies are limited. This year we are making the revolutionary decision to get rid of desks and try alternative seating plans. Bodies are meant to stay in motion and having a child focus on keeping a body still takes away from the energy they can dedicate to learning.
We are an ICT class with a mix of general education and special education students.
While all students can benefit from flexible seating, our students who have special learning needs often have an extra challenge keeping their bodies still. Looking at research made us realize: WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE TO!
My Project
After reading research and looking at many other classrooms, my co-teacher and I have decided to go desk-less! We have read numerous articles, spoken to other teachers, and come to the conclusion that our students will focus and learn better if they are able to move freely about their environment. A quote from one of the articles we read states:
"Brain research also confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process.
Eric Jensen (2000), in his article Moving with the Brain in Mind, protests against the sedentary classroom style and suggests a better way to spend the long days in our classrooms, not only for students, but for teachers. Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, learning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting.
