This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For some of my students, just getting to school is a miracle. Our school is situated in a gang infested, crime riddled neighborhood, and several of our students relish the safety and security that the school building provides. They work hard to achieve good grades and learn important life skills. Subsequently, hopes of college are alive and well in the hallways because they know that their options are limited. Our students are bright and hungry, but our resources are limited.

My Project

Over 60% of my students are English Language Learners. They are in dire need of visual aids to help them recognize and use the important academic vocabulary they will need as they complete the literary and writing tasks required of them in their English Language Arts class. The Language posters are an essential tool in helping students master certain academic skills in ELA that will serve them in every other curricular area. They will also help with a visual reference for students that need this extra accommodation. This generation is especially visual so it is important to create a visually rich and interactive environment. Students will use white boards to assess immediate need for a more individualized instruction as they try and master essential ELA skills.
