My Students

My class is full of energetic, eager, and inquisitive 8 to 9 year old kids. Learning is something that my 3rd graders love to do. They are kind, compassionate, and helpful. Everyday I am tasked with teaching students ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd grade reading levels, which makes meeting each of their individual needs challenging. Our school is located on the south side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Unfortunately, some of them have had experiences that no child should have to live through. 100% of my students are on free or reduced lunch, and yet they are rich with spirit in spite of the challenges they face. It is my goal to provide them with the high quality education that they deserve.

My Project

Third grade is an important year. My students will spend a lot more time writing and working independently. They will also spend time on the computer during both reading and math. The two most frustrating things for both myself and students are having pencils that constantly need to be sharpened or replaced, and being unable to hear what is being said on the computer. The earbuds students are currently given often become tangled or stop working after only a week or two and students constantly need to have their pencils replaced. This leads to many disruptions in the rest of the learning that is happening in the classroom. Having mechanical pencils and quality headphones will ensure that learning is maximized each and every moment of every day. Students will receive mechanical pencils to use during independent work time so they will no longer have to worry about being interrupted by the need to replace a pencil or being disrupted by someone else who is replacing a pencil. In addition, each student will receive his or her own a pair of quality headphones that will stay on their ears and help to cancel the outside noise to use during the time on the computer.
