My Students

What do you remember about middle school? What will you help 70 brilliant and hard working scholars remember? We are the class of 2020 (the year we will graduate from college). We are at a high poverty middle school in NY, and we are looking for some basic writing supplies from a donor like you!

As a fourth year teacher in a young school, I quickly discovered that students are brilliant, yet many of my scholars are performing below grade level.

The area where they struggle the most is writing, and in grade 8 this is heavily assessed by the state. Because it is not assessed heavily in grade 7, scholars often come to me with a lack of interest and ability in putting their thoughts on paper. Through theater, storytelling, and poetry workshops, scholars begin to realize they have stories to tell and that writing is a way to communicate. Once they realize it is exciting, they start to make tremendous progress.

My Project

My scholars work so hard and are on track to make 2 years of writing growth this year due to all of their extra work! We need these supplies to continue to take the steps to reach our goals. With our new markers and dry erase supplies, we will be able to create artwork to visualize our writing! The paper will allow us to create and publish our pieces in style. The highlighters and post-it notes will assist us in locating important points for our research projects. These materials will give my scholars an opportunity to not only achieve their goals, but develop a lifelong passion for writing.

My scholars know that writing is important because it helps them learn to be better readers, critical thinkers, and people.

They have written about their desire to find a cure for cancer and AIDS, to be authors and engineers, forensic anthropologists, lawyers, and humanitarians. They know that none of this will be possible for them unless they learn to become independent writers and thinkers. Please help them take the next step towards achieving their goals!
