My Students

"Can we sit at our desks to learn now? We haven't been at our desk all day". "But we've been learning all day!" is the answer I give to my eager five year old students. This group of students come to school every day full of life and ready to learn! Despite the challenges that come with being from an income challenged background and a neighborhood filled with crime, 95% of my children attend school every day.

My school is a Title I school with 100% free lunch in Cleveland, Ohio.

Many of the students in my classroom do not own books of their own. It is my desire to expose them to a variety of literature in a variety of different subject areas such as math, science, and social studies as well as reading!

My Project

Writing is a form of expression. These materials will encourage my students to become good writers. Writer's Workshop is a method to teach students the ELA standards while helping them to develop a love of writing. During the writer's workshop students may sit at the writing desk to practice skills learned during the mini-lesson. The writing center will include a variety of writing papers and paper for students to journal, draw pictures and make books. Using mini-lessons, independent writing and sharing time, students will begin to learn good writing habits. During the mini-lessons we will share the pen. Using the easel pads we will create a shared writing experience using the easel pads and correction tape for mistakes. The highlight tape will be used to highlight a variety of skills during the shared writing. The carpet rounds will be where students sit during the mini-lessons and sharing time. Because of the flexibility, students will be able to work around the room with their collaboration partners to refine their writing. The mentor texts will provide examples of what good writing looks like. The writing center and supplies will allow them the opportunity to practice skills we learn during our mini-lessons. It will also provide them the opportunity to publish their writing to share with the class, family and friends.

Writing is one of the toughest skills to teach children.

Giving students the opportunity to develop their own ideas around writing at a young age will help to enhance their writing skills as they get older. Students will start this journey using a combination of drawing, dictation and/or writing. They will learn to work to revise their writing for publication. Students will be assessed using rubrics, peer editing and conferring with the teacher. Establishing a solid foundation is the building block for student achievement.
