The Write Stuff: Building Community Through Friendly Letters

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are English Language Learners in a Spanish developmental bilingual program, which means that they are exposed to listening and speaking in English, but learn Spanish reading and writing first. These students transition into English reading and writing in second grade. My students attend one of the largest public elementary schools in Wisconsin, with nearly 800 students, 98% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunches. As the second and third grade English as a Second Language Teacher, I help to bridge Spanish and English Literacy.
If you were to enter my classroom, you would hear students speaking primarily in Spanish, but as I enter the room students begin to shift to English!
They are bridging two languages to become future leaders in an ever-changing world and I will do all that I can to support them.
My Project
Every month our school has Eagle Mail, which allows students to write to each other and to staff members. It gives them the opportunity to practice writing friendly letters as well as more formal writing. It teaches them to properly address an envelope and use stamps. Students sort the mail and deliver it to the classroom mailboxes.
Writing to others not only builds writing skills but it helps build community, too!
It helps the students cultivate relationships with friends in different classrooms or keep in touch with siblings in other grade levels. My students are so excited to write and receive letters. These materials, especially the note cards will make writing even more engaging.
