Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are a 3rd-8th grade elementary school deeply rooted in Mexican culture. As an ethnically-rich neighborhood, we have a long history with migrant families, which poses unique challenges to the education system. Providing quality education to English language learners (ELLs) is one of the biggest challenges that our school faces.

As an 8th grade writing teacher, I try to structure a writing classroom that is creative, collaborative, and comfortable for the students.

I understand that it can be difficult, especially as an English language learner, to get ideas flowing, so it is my goal to create a classroom that inspires and motivates young authors. My students enjoy moving around the room to comfortable spaces in order to engage in conversations and brainstorming. These spaces provide students a choice of how and where they want to work and allow them to get out of their typical, cramped desk space if desired. The carpet would brighten up a dull classroom, and the loveseat and chairs would provide a relief from their traditional desks. I want the space to feature soft lighting, comfortable seating arrangements such as couches, armchairs, or bean bags, and tables or surfaces for writing or working. With previous items purchased, the decor would be an eclectic mix of vintage and modern elements and will also include wall art, plants, and other cozy touches. The overall goal is to create a space that feels welcoming and fosters creativity and collaboration among students with a coffee house atmosphere.

This type of classroom environment can be especially beneficial for ELL students who may struggle with traditional classroom settings and need a more relaxed and informal space to learn and thrive.
