Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sometimes children do not realize that the world exists beyond their home and neighborhoods. As a teacher, I feel that it is my job to provide opportunities for my students to learn about real life events and topics that extend nationally and globally. I hope you can help me do that.
My school is in an urban city.
Many of my students come from a low socioeconomic environment where there are limited opportunities for learning at home. A majority of my students are bilingual and struggle with fluency, language development, and comprehension. Their exposure to nonfiction text is limited and their overall knowledge of global issues is almost nonexistent.
My Project
Time for Kids will present nonfiction text in a colorful, kid-friendly format. They will be able to learn about issues and events that are happening around the world and talk about it. This will help them with their comprehension skills, oral language development, and expand their background knowledge.
Teaching kids that they are global citizens is an essential piece to education. If students are not exposed to life outside of their communities, they are limited to what they will view for their future. I want my students to know their options are endless and that there is more out there than meets the eye.
This project is for both the 3rd and 4th grade reading students.
This kind of text will also allow us to integrate social studies into the day. Unfortunately, with time and curriculum constraints, social studies is the first to go! We have used Time for Kids in the past, funded by Donors Choose, and it has made a difference for our kids. We just don't have the money to order it ourselves and we need your help!
