Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Drop everything and read! Students in my middle school classes are lacking the opportunity to get their hands on interesting and engaging science articles and reading materials that can help them improve their literacy and desire to learn. My students need to see that science is EVERYWHERE!
My NYC middle school students come from low income households and attend a public school in the Bronx.
They are diverse and unique and lack exposure and opportunities to get their hands on amazing and interesting educational reading materials. Additionally, many of our students are at the bottom tier for literacy which has led the creation of additionally obstacles for them overcome in the learning process.
My Project
A subscription to Science World magazine will help me incorporate current event articles into weekly instruction with my students. Each Science World issue has a plethora of articles that connect and relate the classroom science content to the real world! The magazines provide engaging and unique articles that attend to all areas of interests for students and come with CRAZY and exciting images and puzzles. My students will also be able to use these magazines to improve their literacy and reading comprehension skills which is a major area of difficulty. EXCITEMENT, KNOWLEDGE, AND ENGAGEMENT!.... that is what Science World will bring to my science classroom!
A little bit goes a LONG way.
The possibilities for these Science Magazines are ENDLESS! Beyond just current event article reading these magazines can hook my students to fall in love with science. They will be able to see firsthand how science is present in their lives each and every day. If we can find a way to motivate and engage our students then we can truly help instill in them the value of reading and self-exploration for knowledge. Our students are the future!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
