Pieces of white paper with black ink--gets the job done, I suppose, but with zero excitement and our students are definitely a technicolor bunch! What a huge difference a color printer would make in so many ways!
Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools.
Our school provides a safe place for them to make mistakes, learn coping skills and problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum. Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day as has been the case for them far too often, we keep these students in class by utilizing behavior strategies and a crisis mindset that has been shown to be successful with these students. Students are given multiple opportunities to practice the learned skills and strategies that will help them cope with the stressful situations that made it impossible for them to remain in class at their home schools. Hands-on learning and creating beautiful projects are exceedingly motivating!
My Project
Everything our students create will take on new life and new importance with the ability to print in color with the requested printer and cartridges. Students love to print out the work that they do--multiply that by 100 if they can do it in color. This is very motivating for even the most challenging of students. With the addition of color to the equation, new dimensions can be added to the learning tools they create. A grey-scale pie chart is very unimpressive. Our Excel spreadsheets will take on a whole new meaning for many, desktop publishing will suddenly make sense, and what a thrill to be able to finally print out a photograph in all its glorious color--color means everything. We have chosen a laser printer for its speed and durability. This particular model is designed for high traffic usage, which we definitely are planning to have! We can't wait to show you our colorful masterpieces!
There is not a single color printer in the building.
With such a limited budget, there simply is no way to keep color printers outfitted with ink. This printer's speed, efficiency and the extra ink that we have requested will allow us to use it regularly for all the students' work and not just those projects "worthy" of printing in color because we have to scrimp. Color is a magical quality. Students learn more, retain more and are more excited about their learning when they can do it in color!
