I am excited to be a teacher in the heart of the valleys of North Carolina. We are a Title One school with a wonderfully diverse group of children that deserve the honor of knowing the beauty of each other's culture.
My children find glory in experiencing the heart of cultural experiences as expressed by children from around the world. I would like to help my children have a chance to travel around the world through a single piece of literature.
Through the story "How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World," my students would take a passport to centers manned by community members who would help them experience a taste of culture.
With each center they go to, they will be equipped with information about a part of the world in which one ingredient for the apple pie could be aquired. They will be involved in math concepts such as measurement, money values, fractions, problem solving, estimation, and timelines.
At the same time, they will appreciate domestic awareness such as baking. Moreover, they will experience a taste of culture as they venture to each center. The educational opportunities are countless from this single piece of literature that I am requesting for each of my students - "How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World."
My students would be grateful for the opportunity to see the world and make an apple pie just like the one made by the little girl in this story. The opportunity to use their hands and their hearts would be a rewarding experience for everyone.
