My Project

This year will be a year of firsts! After 18 years of teaching Pre-K, Kinder, and 1st, I will be starting my journey as a 2nd grade teacher! I will even be given the gift of teaching some of my past Kinders! However, all of my teaching materials, games, and books are centered around early childhood and beginning readers. I began my Accelerated Reader library while teaching first, but my library is lacking books for grades second and higher. I know that my incoming students are excited to take their reading to the next level. I would love to be able to give them interesting and grade-appropriate books to start the new school year off right!

"A book is a dream you hold in your hand." (Neil Gaiman) With these books, I will be able to not only add to my independent reading library but also expand my read-aloud library.

I have planned for a special read-aloud portion of our day to allow my students to be introduced to new series, authors, and genres. Our read-aloud time will help my students develop their listening skills, expand their vocabulary, and create opportunities for discussions. This portion of our day will allow them to use their imaginations and hopefully get them excited to read these books on their own!

The Magic Tree House series, Mercy Watson, and Henry and Mudge set will be used during our read-aloud time. The individual books will be labeled with the reading level and added to our Accelerated Reader library. Every day the students are given independent reading time to select a book on their level to read and take a quiz. My goal is to create confident, independent readers who believe in their ability and leave my classroom with a love of reading!
