The World Around Us...Keeping up with Current Events.
My students need Time for Kids magazines in order to increase knowledge of current events and add to their knowledge of informational text.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last school year I was fortunate enough to receive funding through Donor's Choose. I used the Time for Kids magazines in order to teach features of informational text. Well, it worked, but not only that - I saw an excitement in student learning that I had never seen!
I teach at an inner city school.
Our total population is almost 600 and still growing. We are considered to be an under performing school when it comes to high stakes testing, yet I ask myself the same question every year - How can these kids be expected to do well on a test when the majority of the children come to school hungry, tired, or stressed out due to family issues. And we expect them to have prior knowledge about current events and relate their experiences to what they read. My students are like sponges, they absorb every new piece of information I can feed them, and I try to make their learning relevant. I go out of my way to enhance their learning, and any time I can provide a prop or a picture to help them understand a subject, I jump at the opportunity. I know they would love a "real life" magazine that they could relate a little bit of themselves to, and hopefully carry that information on as they proceed into the upper grades.
My Project
Our current Social Studies books are from the 1970's. So much of the information in the textbook is outdated, and so are the pictures. The kids find it boring and difficult to read. Time for Kids is current and geared specifically for children. The pictures are amazing and the reading level is appropriate for students of various reading levels. Also, the magazine would allow itself to follow the new common core standards, with the focus being non-fiction. It is a supply that the students would be able to use in the classroom, and take the information home with them to keep. We, as teachers, are always trying to get parents involved in their child's learning. Time for Kids would be enjoyable to read at home as a family as well.
I would love the opportunity to provide my students with a little something "extra." A simple magazine that is fun to read would be just that.
It isn't always the biggest things in life that matter, but the fact that this magazine was donated to our classroom and we were chosen would make a huge difference in my students lives. They are not used to being "special."
