I am a teacher of 12 severely, multiply challenged students ages 7-9 years. Although their cognitive abilities and physical limitations vary from student to student, they all have one characteristic that remains the same. All the children are extremely limited with their expressive and receptive language skills. My staff and I work diligently to assist the students to develop labels for objects in their immediate environment and world around them. The best way to develop these skills is through their visual modality with the use of pictures. Due to their severe cognitive limitations, we must also use objects as a concrete form of object representation. It is often difficult to coordinate objects with matching pictures for use in the classroom. While looking through a school catalog, I came across a variety of materials that increase language skills through the use of photographs and objects. The photo libraries and object-picture matching games would be a wonderful addition to my teaching materials and would greatly assist me in helping my students receptively and expressively understand The World Around Them. Please help me give them the language skills needed to more effectively understand and communicate their needs.
