This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember when you were in high school? Most students were forced to take home economics. Well, the version of home ec for my students is functional academics. My goal for them is to be able to live as independently as possible when they continue life after high school!
I teach adults with autism!
They attend a charter school for individuals on the autism spectrum. They are working very hard to learn the necessary skills required to live as independently as possible. Each student works on a variety of skills each day such as washing clothes, making the bed and unloading the dish washer. We also work on tasks such as exchanging money to reading and locating information in weekly grocery ads! They continuously work very hard to learn skills so they may live as independently as they possibly can!
My Project
My goal is to help create an environment within the classroom that mimics the real world. For example, using the pretend foods to stock shelves, determine where to put food away, and how to check out items using a cash register. I would also like to utilize calculators and timers to help increase their functional math skills by telling time and staying on a schedule! Finally, the work bins will help to create responsibility through managing their own items.
The donations will help improve the classroom tremendously.
The tools provided will increase the students functional skills. They will be able to work on employability skills as well as every day household chores. They will use the tools to generalize when they move on to the next chapter of their lives. The donations will ensure that they can become more ready to live as close to independent life as possible!
