Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the pleasure of teaching three sections of 8th graders about all the magic that can happen with numbers. My scholars are mostly of Hispanic and African American descent who are full of energy, individuality, and potential, which they show daily by casually talking about topics like Fortnite, pro basketball, and various YouTube videos that catch their eye. They enjoy eating all types of foods, but are most excited when someone brings in a dish with flavors that play up their heritage. Though I am their teacher they educate me a lot in math and on life each day because they are not afraid to air their thoughts and opinions. They make me laugh and I look forward to seeing them continue developing into capable and inspiring young adults.
My Project
The magic of numbers only comes to life for most students when math is hands on. Because of this, in addition to typical school supply items I have requested items I think can bring the content to life and make it more accessible for all learners with different needs. There are dry erase boards and chart paper for drawing/writing, buzzers and balls for games and competition, and manipulatives like tiles for modeling. I also requested a utility cart so that I may transport materials I need each day for teaching to the various classrooms my students are in. This way they get a full interactive, math experience no matter where they are.
