My students need materials (white boards, journals, markers) to practice pre-writing skills on a daily basis to learn letter recognition, letter sounds, and expand oral language and vocabulary.
Every morning I am greeted with twenty smiling faces who say, "Good morning, Mrs. R." Eighty percent of our school population is on free or reduced price lunch.
My classroom demographics are sixty percent African American, fifteen percent White, fifteen percent Hispanic and ten percent Indian.
I have students where English is their second language, as well as students in the Exceptional Student Education program.
All of my students are unique in their own way. Each child has varied academic levels. Some students need more challenging activities and other students need extra support and remediation. Regardless of the academic needs, my students are ready for a day of learning through hands-on activities, singing, and play.
My Project
I am a first year teacher. In fact, I started teaching in January 2017. I walked into a classroom where I did not know what supplies were available or what my students had been learning from the beginning of the school year.
I teach at a Title I school and my students come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.
I want to offer my students an environment where they are actively learning throughout the day. One way I can do this is by having whiteboards and markers available to every student. Currently, I only have enough whiteboards to work with students in a small group. I would love to expand my students' knowledge with whiteboards during whole group instruction every morning. Students will practice writing their names, letters, numbers, and more.
In addition to the whiteboards and markers, the Picture Word Journals will expand my students' knowledge of the alphabet and sounds by writing words that start with each letter. These journals will be used daily by my students. Starting the year with all of these materials will allow my students to enter The Wonderful World of Writing!
