This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the high school librarian of an urban 9-12 secondary school in California. My overarching literary objectives are to inspire my students to discover the magic of the written word and to become life-long readers.
While some of my students are already voracious readers who I want to continue to nourish, others do not enjoy reading and/or struggle with it and it is my hope to kindle a literary light inside of them.
Introducing students to performance poetry has been a magnificent way to encourage those who detest and/or have difficulty with reading to find power and joy in the written word as well as to sustain the literary zeal of those who already treasure story and language.
My Project
Whenever this troupe performs at my school, students are in awe. Many of them, for the first time, begin to understand the relevance of written communication; the analytical depth of lyrics; and how writing and reading can literally transcend one's mindset and perspective, heal one's heart, and empower one's voice.
Most students vacate their consciousness during assemblies, but every year, when students come to this performance, I know they listen with great attention and enthusiasm.
Many stay afterward to talk to the performers. Several come into the library to share with me their poetry...some have been writing for years and some were inspired to pick it up from attending this performance.
I know this experience changes lives, electrifies intellectual sensibilities, and stimulates creativity. I hope you believe in the importance of connecting young people to the written word as much as I do and will consider this project. I thank you in advance.
